With the discovery of a cenote right below the Pyramid of Kukulcan at Chichen Itza, researchers now wonder about its dimensions.
The investigator Rene Chavez, from the Institute of Geophysics of the UNAM, said that the way to reach that finding was long and necessary in order to retake diverse knowledge as well as practices previously performed at this archaeological site.
“That was how we decided to use geophysical methods that could determine any irregularities inside the pyramid,” the specialist of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) explained to Mexican News Agency Notimex.
During the presentation of the findings at the “House of the Humanities” (Casa de las Humanidades), the scientist explained that, to test the methods they would use in the pyramid also known as ‘The Castle’, previous tests were carried out on another ancient building located on the same site known as “El Osario”.
“El Osario” had a cavity inside the building as well as a staircase leading to the cavity, so the methods used were tested on this structure first.
Subsequently, electrodes specifically designed not to damage the Pyramid of Kukulcan, were placed carefully around it, and with these parameters the results were displayed as colors, where red and blue represented cavities, water, among other things.
“This is how we determined that there is a large body of water underneath the pyramid of “El Castillo”.
So now it is up to the archaeologists to answer the numerous questions regarding this finding.
“Did the Maya had knowledge of that body of water before building the pyramid? Once we get these answers, they will contribute to a deeper understanding of this magnificent culture“, said Rene Chavez Segura.
