Mexicans, Americans and Canadians get together to have fun with their pets

Dog lovers are invited to head for the town of Los Barriles, near La Paz, Baja California Sur in February for a day of dog competitions and other related events.

Organizers expect the Los Barriles Dog Show to build on the success of the first show, held in 2015, when 150 dogs competed and brought Mexicans, Americans and Canadians together to celebrate and have fun with their pets.

They are hoping to double the number of dogs and spectators.

It is also a fundraising event that Emma Nicholson of the Los Barriles Kennel Club hopes will become one of the largest charity tourist events in the state, supporting spay and neuter clinics organized by local charities.

The 2015 event raised US $5,000.

“The feedback from communities, from Cabo to La Paz, confirms that we can expect many more people in 2017. We hope the show will become one of the largest charity tourist events in Baja by uniting people through their love for their dogs,” Nicholson said.

The show will offer awards in various classes, such as best looking mixed breed, best costume, best looking dog based on weight, the dog that is most like its owner and several others, along with amateur agility events.

There will be a display by the Disc Dogs of Mexico and demonstrations by the Schutzhund Club and the Pit Bull Association of La Paz.

The show takes place Sunday, Feb. 26 at the Hotel Palmas de Cortéz in Los Barriles, located in the municipality of La Paz. Events begin at 11:00am. More information is available on the kennel club’s website.
