Mexicali BC, on July 25, 2017. Coach Carlos Manuel Arenas Beltrán arrived in Mexicali from Ciudad Obregón, Sonora and went directly to the gymnasium to introduce himself to the students who make up the Zorros de CETYS University, Campus Mexicali basketball team.
The new Head Coach joins the CETYS family with the expectation of improving the level of game of the team, based on work and dedication from himself and all the members of Zorros, whom he met when he faced them on the court last season.
A national-class coach
Arenas’ decision was not easy, since he had three different offers, the Technological Institute of Sonora (ITSON), Tec de Monterrey Preparatory Campus Ciudad Obregón and the Secondary School SENDA, but in the end, Zorros was his choice.
Arenas has confidence in the team, but also on his own experience, since he has worked with professional squads in national competitions, in which he managed to qualify 5 out of 6 times in recent years.
Arena’s goals with Zorros are:
- To classify in the Student Basketball Association (ABE) Nationals and the National Sports Council (CONNDE).
- Position “Zorros” as the best team in the region.
- Do an outstanding job on the inclusion project of the National University Athletic Association of the United States (NCAA).
“I do not want to venture and say that we are going for the championship, but we are going to classify and do somenting not previously achieved by this institution, we have the human material, although we also need to include the athletes from the Tijuana Campus and there is a possibility to bring one or two more players, so we can have extraordinary achievements, ” said the Coach during his first training session.
Teamwork without neglecting school
The coach is aware that in life, you win and you loose, but it is the young athletes’ merit on the court: “I am not the one making the baskets or playing defense, but I am responsible to provide the boys with the necessary tools and preparation to win, “he said.
“I know that CETYS University is a prestigious institution of academic excellence, so the young people who make up the basketball team must be fully committed to comply with their academic duties and the team,” coach Arenas concluded.
