One person arrested for transporting Totoaba in Mexicali

The federal environmental attorney (PROFEPA) reported through a statement that on kilometer 6 + 500 of the San Felipe-Puertecitos road section, agents of the Federal Police located in the back of a 2003 Ford Escape XLT vehicle, a totoaba specimen. The incident took place on Monday March 19.

In compliance with the protocols, a person was detained and transferred to the facilities of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) in Mexicali, Baja California.

 

Specialists of the Profepa developed and rendered the corresponding expert opinion of identification of the product, where it was determined that according to the physical and morphological characteristics of the swim bladders, they belong to totoaba specimens.

 

The totoaba is listed under the category of endangered species within the Official Mexican Standard NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, as well as in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora ( CITES) and its distribution is limited only to the Gulf of California, so it is considered an endemic species.
