Cabo San Lucas, BCS.- President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced the cancellation of the project to exploit the Los Cardones open-pit gold mine, promoted by the company Desarrollos Zapal; The mine is located in the Sierra de La Laguna, one of the main aquifers of La Paz and Los Cabos.
“A few months ago I was in La Paz and they were asking about the mine. The definition time has come and I tell the people of Baja California Sur: there will be no mine “, which generated prolonged applause from the audience. “Why not? Because we have to take care of paradise, not destroy paradise, take care of nature. And if I’m talking about people living from tourism, we have to take care of the environment. And if I’m talking about water supply, we have to take care of the water in the subsoil. ” AMLO said.
Then he added, “My critics are going to say: why there was a consultation for the airport and why there was an inquiry to decide upom the thermoelectric plant and not for the mine. It’s simple, the airport was started by others; the thermoelectric and the gas pipeline were also initiated by the last government. And regarding the mine, it is my turn to decide, and I say no. And I have the faculty”.
The announcement was made in the framework of the start of the urban improvement program of 15 tourist cities, with a budget of 8 billion pesos this year.
The president also announced the construction of a desalination plant in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, with an investment of one billion pesos.
López Obrador was accompanied by governor Carlos Mendoza Davis, who was booed at all times by those attending the baseball field of the Sports Unit “Professor Leonardo Gastélum”
