Environment Secretary denies import permit for one thousand tons of Glyphosate to prevent health and ecologic harm

Preventing health and negative environmental impact, is the reason why the Secretary of the Environment (Semarnat) didn´t authorize the introduction of one thousand metric tons of glyphosate to Mexico, since it is a hazardous substance, which in contained in more than 750 insecticides and pesticides used in agriculture, forestry and has urban and household applications, but has been determined as harmful for living organisms, so there is an immediate ban on one hundred eleven products, deemed as highly dangerous, according to a press release from the Integral Risk Activities and Materials General Direction of the Semarnat.

Once again corporate giant MONSANTO is behind chemical products that may become a big hazard for human health, even when the company denies any negative effect for its glyphosate products such as ROUNDUP herbicide.

The ban on glyphosate (which an active ingredient of Monsanto´s Roundup herbicide) is permanent, as long as there is no scientific data that may guarantee that it can be used with no affectation to human health or on environmental balance, said Víctor M. Toledo, Environment Secretary and mentioned that there is a big need for public policies which may prevent harmful environmental, social and cultural effects of modern agriculture.

MONSANTO has intensified advertising campaigns to assure the public that glyphosate is harmless, but the corporate ginat has become notorious for its commercial publicity stunts to deny any accountability regarding negative effects

Semarnat applied the cautionary principle to deny entrance to the aforementioned glyphosate freight, in order to keep respect and protect the Mexicans right to a healthy environment and the right to be healthy, from which surges the obligation of the Mexican Government to establish limitations to these kind of imports, thus preventing risks of serious and irreversible ecological and public health damage.

Environmental Law must set human and ecological rights above the property or industry rights, since it affects biodiversity: “It has been proved that pesticides and mainly insecticides, have several lethal and sub-lethal effects in pollination agents” so to diminish this risk it is recommended to adopt specific application practices, integral pest and plague handling, farmer education risk assessment and the implementation of public policies in order to reduce the use of this sort of substance.

The announced ban on the glyphosate metric ton is based on the Human Rights National Commission Recommendation 82/2018, which restricts the use of highly hazardous pesticides, high environmental risk, since its use may be the cause of serious and irreversible human illness and environmental harm
