Red Cross has treated 122 patients for dehydration or heat exhaustion in Mexicali this summer

“A total of 122 people had to receive urgent medical attention because of the extreme heat, high temperatures and intense humidity recorded in Mexicali during the last weeks,” reported the Red Cross director in Mexicali, Jose Espinoza Astorga.

“105 patients presented dehydration, 5 of them severely; 11 people suffered heat exhaustion and there was one isolated case of heat stroke”, the doctor said.

“The man who suffered the heat stroke, was immediately transferred to the General Hospital,” he continued.

Espinoza Astorga said that according to the technical report that is conducted by the Red Cross on a weekly basis, the number of patients treated because of the heat during the months of June, July and August is higher than the same period last year.

He called on the population to avoid doing outdoor activities from 11:00 to 17:00 hours. Stating that the month of August is considered the critical point of the summer in Mexicali, so prevention measures need to be strengthened.

Staying in the shade or a cool place, drinking plenty of water alternating with Serum Oral, wearing light clothing as well as hats and umbrellas are the main recommendations.
